The building in the Jätkäsaari Service Block is part of the group rental concept developed by A-Kruunu and Talli Architects. The concept offers an alternative to the mass production of small apartments based on individual-centered values and takes part in the societal discussion that proclaims communality, sharing and a vibrant urban culture. Group rental housing concept is a communal rental housing type: a big apartment designed to accommodate a group of residents consisting mainly of single-person households. Members of these groups can already be familiar with each other or be complete strangers. Communal housing interests people of many ages and backgrounds–the connecting factor is the residents will to share their own daily lives and living environment with other people. The group rental concept is a “Kehittyvä kerrostalo” project. 

The project consists of one eight-storey residential building that includes seven group rental apartments. The apartments are designed to fit the needs of communal living, so each has versatile private and common spaces. It is possible to connect a studio apartment to some of the group apartments, which increases their flexibility and social wealth. The residents can choose their own household members, which makes group living differ from traditional shared living and brings it to a new level.
