In 2000 and 2001 plans were made for new exhibition and conference spaces, situated on the entrance of the vehicular ramp facing Töölönlahti Bay. The size of this extension is 2500 m2. Based on these drafts the Ministry of the Environment approved changes to the protected building, originally designed by Alvar Aalto in 1971-1973.
