The Nokia Cable company moved out of their premises in 1989. They temporarely rented out the former factory spaces to artists and entrepeneurs, before handing them over to the City of Helsinki.

These tenants formed the Pro Kaapeli assosiation, which fought against the demolishion plans of the city and for keeping the factory alive as an creative environment. Among these tenants was Pia Ilonen. She created a plan for saving the building. Since then Talli architects have been taking care of various step by step -renovations in the Cable factory.
